Born in Oederan, Germany, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Tadeusz Kantor, then at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Igor Mitoraj was born on 26 March 1944 in Oederan, a small town in Saxony, in what was then Nazi Germany. His father was French, his mother Polish; the family had been displaced by the wartime upheaval of Eastern Europe. After the end of the war, Mitoraj grew up in Poland — in Kraków, the ancient royal capital that had survived the Second World War largely intact and remained a centre of Polish cultural life under the post-war communist government.
